Two elderly Gatineau residents have died from causes that include flu in a long-term care home, following three earlier flu-related deaths in the Hôpital de Hull.

West Quebec’s Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) says the two people who died at Lionel Emond centre were already in poor health, as were the three people who have died since mid-January in the hospital.

As a result, both the Lionel Emond centre and another long-term care centre, La Pietà, are now restricting visits to one person per resident. As well, all visitors must wear masks, and anyone with flu-like respiratory symptoms or a fever are asked to stay away.

The restrictions are in place at all Outaouais health centres.

So far, 19 people at Lionel-Emond centre have caught flu this winter.

“It is important to note that unfortunately some people die of flu each year,” and that the vulnerable groups are infants and the elderly, said CISSS spokeswoman Geneviève Côté.

There have been 360 cases of influenza reported to Ottawa Public Health since September — the majority of which were influenza A.

No details on the numbers of deaths, if any, have been released in Ottawa. That number of actual cases is believed to be significantly higher than those confirmed by lab tests.

There are currently 18 ongoing respiratory outbreaks at institutions in Ottawa.
