Ottawa police have laid their first charges under a new law that provides an automatic 50-metre bubble zone around abortion clinics in Ontario.

Police said a man was arrested Wednesday near The Morgentaler Clinic on Bank Street and charged with several offences under the Safe Access to Abortion Services Act, which came into effect on Feb. 1.

The man, who was not named, was released with a promise to appear in provincial offences court on March 23.

Police confirmed the charges were laid in connection with a protestor who was photographed by a reader of this newspaper on Bank on Wednesday. He was carrying a sandwich board with a sign that read: Freedom of Expression and Religion, No Censorship. Above those words was a copy of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and a large crucifix.

Police have been monitoring the area closely since the law went into effect and said several warnings have been issued in the last week, including to the individual charged. They were responding to a number of complaints about the demonstrator.

Police did not specify what charges under the act had been laid.

More to come.
