On April 6, 2017, Amanda Dorris gave birth to twins in less than 23 seconds: 22.976 seconds, to be exact.

Since when is having babies calculated to three decimal points, like an Olympic sprint? Since the Guinness World Records is counting, that’s when.

Luckily, there’s video evidence, although Dorris’ husband, Patrick, barely had time to get out his cellphone by the time the fraternal twins girls, Emmanuelle and Élodie, made their dramatic appearances.

This week, Dorris got confirmation from the Guinness people that the birth of the twins was a record under “shortest interval between birth of twins – single confinement” category.

The twins were born prematurely at 35 weeks’ gestation — a term pregnancy is 40 weeks. The babies were not gaining weight, and Dorris was booked at the Gatineau Hospital to be induced on the morning of April 6. Since the birth was considered a high-risk delivery and the pregnancy had been carefully monitored, Dorris was assured the delivery room would be packed full of medical specialists.

After almost nine hours of labour, the twins arrived at 5:21 p.m. When the doctor told Dorris to start pushing, Patrick pressed record on his cellphone. “I didn’t want to miss it,” said Dorris, now 39.

Seconds later, Emmanuelle arrived. Medical staff didn’t even have time to clamp her umbilical cord before her twin sister made an appearance.

“There was a gush — that was the amniotic fluid of Élodie. She just came flying out,” said Dorris. Because they are fraternal twins, Emmanuelle and Élodie were in two separate amniotic sacs.

So fast was the arrival, in fact, that the team of specialists didn’t have enough time to get to the delivery room, she said.

“The doctor had no word to explain it. He was just as shocked as anyone else.”

The video evidence has come in handy when it came to sharing the amazing story, said Patrick. “Doctors were saying, ‘I heard there’s a video. Can I see it?’ I have showed the video to I don’t know how many doctors and nurses.”

Dorris’ mother suggested the speedy delivery had to be some kind of record, and checked it out with the Guinness Book of World Records. The previous record was the birth of identical twins, one minute apart. “My mother said: ‘You beat that record for sure’,” said Dorris. The video was proof.

Emmanuelle weighed four pounds, one ounce at birth while Élodie weighed three pounds, 15 ounces. The twins, who have a 16-year-old brother, Stéphane, are now 10 months old, happy and healthy. Both weigh more than 18 pounds.

Things that take longer than 23 seconds:

29 seconds: The time it took to watch the classic 1971 “Mikey likes it!” Life cereal television commercial. (Most commercials are now 15 seconds long.)

30 seconds: The duration of an earthquake that shook Ottawa on June 23, 2010.

36 seconds: The time it takes to cover one kilometre in a vehicle traveling at 100 km/h.

43.03 seconds: Time it took South African sprinter Wayde van Niekerk to run the 400-metre race at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, winning the gold medal.

45 seconds: Time it takes to listen to the 2016 Pikotaro novelty song PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen), the shortest song to ever crack the Billboard Hot 100.
