Bladed ice dragon boats zoom across Dow's Lake

One hundred teams of hardcore ice dragon boaters, half of them from out of town, hit Dow’s Lake on Saturday for the finals of the second annual Winterlude Ice Dragon Boat Festival.

Billed as the “world’s largest” ice dragon boat competition, racers on the bladed craft are equipped with special spike-equipped sticks, instead of the usual paddles, to propel themselves across the frozen surface.

Weather conditions were ideal, unlike last year when high temperatures and sun turned the ice into slush, requiring a mid-regatta break while organizers determined weather the surface would hold up. The battle was resumed after about an hour, although racing times suffered in the Slurpee-like conditions.
