A man driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 5 in Gatineau somehow avoided hitting anyone, but ended up under arrest anyway.
It happened a little before 2 a.m. on Friday. An RCMP officer had stopped by the side of the northbound lanes of the autoroute to help with a broken-down car.
Then he saw a car coming southbound toward him, on the wrong side of the highway — which has a concrete median. It nearly hit him.
The Mountie set off after the wrong-way driver, while Gatineau officers went ahead to steer other traffic out of the way. It was the RCMP officer who finally pulled the man over.
The RCMP said his blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, and he will be in court next month on a charge of impaired driving. The man was not named in a release Monday.
It’s not known how far he drove in the northbound lanes.
