Friends of Egal Daud, Ottawa’s fifth homicide victim of this year, have expressed surprise and shock at his violent death, saying he was a happy-go-lucky, good-hearted person.

“He was a kind and gentle soul, and he was funny,” said Crystal Curry, who had known the 30-year-old Daud for four years. “But he didn’t talk much about his personal stuff. I didn’t even know if he had a girlfriend, that’s how much he didn’t talk about his personal life.”

Curry described Daud as her confidante who visited her at her home often until Jan. 23, the last day she saw him. “He was telling me how he missed hanging out, because we hadn’t done that in a while, because I’d been stressed out and he was going to school.

“I’m a single mom of three kids, and he’d always come over and bring me food or lend me money for groceries. He’s a good person, and whoever did that to him, I don’t know why they’d do that.”

Daud was found in his car Sunday morning in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Northview Road, near Baseline and Mervale roads. He had been shot. According to Curry, he had been missing for close to a week before his body was found.

“He would come over and we’d hang out and talk and chill. He never said anything too personal; we would mostly just talk about me. It wasn’t about him. He would listen and give advice on what he could. He was a great guy. He helped me and took care of me.

“There was no violent bone in that man’s body, whatsoever,” she added. “Let’s just say somebody was going to rob him for whatever — his money, his phone, whatever. He would give those people that stuff. He wouldn’t argue or anything. So the fact that he supposedly got shot surprises me. He never even got angry — he smiled all the time. He was just a happy-go-lucky person. We don’t understand.”

Daud was studying heating and refrigeration at Algonquin College. Between 2014 and 2015, he worked for a local janitorial service. Before that, he had been convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 20 months in jail and two years probation. He also had a lifetime weapons ban.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in his death.

Another friend, Toni Danielle, expressed sentiments similar to Curry’s, saying that Daud didn’t have “a bad bone in his body.”

“He was amazing,” she added. “I can’t even imagine him having enemies.”
