The entire 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway is temporarily closing Wednesday at 10 p.m. to preserve the ice’s condition, said the National Capital Commission.
The NCC said the balmy weather is eroding the quality of the ice surface, creating hazardous conditions for skaters and the public. The week’s forecast suggests the closures may last through the weekend.
Crews are hoping to open the skateway as quickly as possible, weather permitting.
The NCC urges the public to refrain from venturing onto the skateway once it is closed.
The 48th skateway season started 41 days ago and has so far brought 32 skating days.
