On Tuesday, February 20, Mayor Jim Watson will be joined by 45 local exhibitors to recognize Heritage Day and present the Heritage Day Proclamation to Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin (Algonquin Way Cultural Centre) and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Cultural Education Centre.

Both cultural centres work resolutely on the preservation, interpretation, and revitalization of Algonquin Anishinabe heritage and culture.

Following this year’s festivities, Mayor Watson and members of Council will also inter the Time Capsule Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Canada into a wall at City Hall.

Date: Tuesday, February 20
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Jean Pigott Place, Ottawa City Hall
110 Laurier Avenue, West

The Time Capsule Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Canada includes artefacts that serve as a tribute to current residents and a reminder to future generations of what it meant to live in Ottawa in 2017, Canada’s sesquicentennial year.

Heritage Day in Ottawa is an annual event that encourages residents to explore their local heritage, to get involved with stewardship and advocacy groups, and to visit museums, archives, and places of architectural significance. It is a chance to recognize the contributions of the many dedicated volunteers who promote heritage conservation and public education about the city’s history.
