In 2067, the mayor of Ottawa will crack open a time capsule that has been lodged in a wall at city hall and probably send staff on a search for an old-fashioned gizmo that can read files on a USB stick.
The Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa (CHOO) and Mayor Jim Watson will unveil a plaque and reveal the contents of the time capsule during a Heritage Day event on Tuesday at city hall. Council members will then help inter the time capsule into a wall.
The items are already sealed in the box. The city has created a video of the material so people know what’s inside.
The time capsule represents the memories from Canada’s 150th anniversary year, designed to give residents in 50 years a taste of what the sesquicentennial was like as they celebrate the country’s bicentennial.
The shiny metal box was on display in the city hall rotunda on Monday next to the cutout of the wall where it will be installed.
CHOO has chosen five photographs from its PhotoOttawa150: Capital Time Capture crowdsourcing project to be part of the time capsule.
Watson’s contribution includes an Ottawa 2017 guide, Ottawa 2017 pin and programs from the NHL 100 Classic and the 2017 Grey Cup.
He also wrote a letter to the city.
“It was both really fun and really stressful because you’re writing something that’s going to be read in 50 years,” Watson said on Monday. “Are there driverless cars everywhere? Have we survived a nuclear war? What’s the city like today compared to 50 years from now? You want to try and be thoughtful so they don’t pick up the letter and start laughing.”
Watson added clay versions of the fleur-de-lis, a feather and a rose, representing the peoples at the time of Confederation: the French, Indigenous and English. The artworks were part of an exhibition by the Ottawa Guild of Potters last summer.
Eighteen of the 23 ward councillors contributed items to the time capsule.
The most individual items might have come from West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, who stuffed about 25 items into the time capsule, including 13 photos of West Carleton, handbills from the Carp Fair, admission tickets to the Diefenbunker and an Emergency Planning Canada “11 steps to survival” booklet.
Many councillors put in newspaper articles and photographs of their wards.
The more unique items include a charm bracelet with charms representing the ward from Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans, a glass bottle of Mooney’s Bay beach sand representing the new playground in the park from River Coun. Riley Brockington, and a piece of century-old pipe dug up as part of the Main Street reconstruction courtesy of Capital Coun. David Chernushenko.
Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney printed a booklet of meaningful tweets from 2017.
The USB sticks are courtesy of Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri and Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Michael Qaqish.
According to a list provided by the city, the wards not represented in the time capsule are: Innes ward represented by Jody Mitic, College ward represented by Rick Chiarelli, Rideau-Rockcliffe ward represented by Tobi Nussbaum, Cumberland ward represented by Stephen Blais and Rideau-Goulbourn ward represented by Scott Moffatt.
