Noting that “Mother Nature has spoken,” organizers of Mosaïvernales say they’ve had to shut down early because the snow sculptures can’t be kept up in the continued warm, wet weather.
Only 20,000 people took in the exhibit at Jacques Cartier Park over 20 days.
Organizers had hoped to attract 200,000 over 38 days running through March 4.
“Despite the goodwill and the perseverance of the operations team and the artists, the weather will simply not allow the maintenance and upkeep of the snow sculptures,” organizers said, thanking backers Tourisme Québec, the City of Gatineau, the National Capital Commission and Outaouais Tourism along with “master-sculptors” and 125 volunteers.
The display of more than two dozen illuminated snow sculptures — essentially the winter version of the wildly popular MosaïCanada150 display that attracted 1.3 million visitors — suffered from unseasonably high temperatures when it opened on the last weekend in January, melting parts of the sculptures and forcing the attraction to close for four days.
Unlike MosaïCanada, which was free, Mosaïvernales charged $10 admission for visitors age 13 and up.
