David Gourlay announced Thursday that he’s running for city council in Kanata North days after resigning as president of the Ottawa Champions.

The 47-year-old Beaverbrook native has several backers – including former Ottawa Senators president Cyril Leeder – as he launches his campaign in advance of the Oct. 22 election.

He said in a statement issued Thursday morning that “it takes strong leadership, hard work and collaboration to move forward on the local projects and issues that matter most to our community” and that he’ll be door-knocking over the next eight months to hear what residents want from the city.

Gourlay resigned from the club on the sixth anniversary of the day he established the community-driven Champions for Ottawa Baseball, which he led as a volunteer.

The ward is currently represented by Marianne Wilkinson.
