Nabbing a downtown parking spot turned out to be too good to be true.

City police say a 32-year-old Ottawa man is now wanted on a fraud charge for allegedly renting out spaces in the core that didn’t actually exist.

They’ve obtained an arrest warrant for Daniel MacKay on charges of fraud under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

Police say he placed online advertisements and took cash for parking spots in December and January and police say they’re concerned that there may be other victims who they’re asking to report online at ottawapolice.ca.

“The organized fraud unit would like to remind consumers to be vigilant when purchasing items online from unknown persons,” police said in a release.

MacKay is described as a white male, six feet tall and 185 pounds with a medium build and balding brown hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call the organized fraud unit at 613-236-1222, ext.5433. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
