One person was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire in a Blackburn Hamlet bungalow that was under renovation.
Firefighters were summoned by a 911 call reporting white smoke at 17 Tauvette St. near Innes Road at 12:42 p.m. Thursday. The occupants were able to escape safely but the first crews on scene found black smoke coming from the front door and declared a working fire at 12:46 a.m.
They went inside, launched a”rapid-fire attack” and had the flames under control at 12:52 a.m. and losses stopped at 1:34 p.m.
While an inspector determined the cause, firefighters continued to remove insulation and drywall to keep the fire from rekindling.
The fire department issued a reminder that people should get out when there are signs of smoke – no matter what colour – and place calls for help from outside. And when fleeing a burning building, close the door behind you: this simple strategy can help limit fire spread and growth, the department said.
