Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor announced the winners of the second edition of the Ottawa Social Impact Awards at the GenNext Ottawa Mix & Mingle: Winter Social. The awards, organized by Impact Hub Ottawa, the City of Ottawa and Algonquin College, recognize Ottawa-based community initiatives and social enterprises who are making a positive impact in our city.

Ottawa Social Impact Award winners

Social Enterprise category

  • Hidden Harvest Ottawa - Hidden Harvest Ottawa is doing more than picking and sharing food. Through social innovation and a low carbon footprint, each harvest provides a wealth of social, environmental & economic benefits.

Community Initiative category

  • Ausome Ottawa - Ausome Ottawa is the only organization in Ottawa dedicated to removing barriers to physical activity to kids with autism and their families, all in a judgement-free zone.

Future Leaders category

  • Algonquin College Public Relations Agency - The students with the Algonquin College Public Relations Agency partner with local charities to creatively raise awareness and funds that help bring positive change to the Ottawa community.

In January 2018, the City and Impact Hub Ottawa called for nominations of community initiatives, student-led projects and social enterprises that are making a positive social impact through innovative and collaborative work. The public was invited to vote for the nominees they felt were the best for Ottawa. In total, 42 nominations were received and more than 22,000 votes were cast. The three nominees with the highest number of votes in each category were shortlisted. A panel of judges evaluated the shortlist and selected the winners. The panel was comprised of City Councillor Catherine McKenney; Albert Wong, Director of Junior Achievement Ottawa; and Leanna Verrucci, Managing Director at Algonquin College.

Quotes

“These awards highlight impressive community initiatives and social enterprises that are making a lasting social impact on our city in ways that emphasize the power of the collective rather than the individual alone. Congratulations to the winners and the nominees, whose work is making a significant difference in our city both socially and economically.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa

“Congratulations to all the Ottawa Social Impact Award nominees and this year’s recipients: Hidden Harvest, Ausome Ottawa, and the Algonquin College Public Relations Agency. There are so many individuals working to make our city a better place and we hope this award provides an opportunity to elevate their profiles, expand their networks, and enhance their capacity to do good better. Thank you to the many partners and contributors who have come together to support the 2018 Ottawa Social Impact Awards and highlight these well deserved organizations.”

Katie Miller, Managing Director, Impact Hub Ottawa
