Haters have dubbed it a waste of money and a boondoggle, but the skating rink at the foot of the Peace Tower has been so popular that officials have extended its season for another three days.
The Canada 150 rink will now be open until Wednesday, Feb. 28, the government has announced.
Skating sessions will be available between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Passes can be booked up to 48 hours in advance at the rinks website: http://canada150rink.com/ .
It’s the second extension for the rink, which was originally slated to be taken down after New Year’s Eve after opening Dec. 7.
There was criticism when it was announced that costs to build and run the rink had topped $8 million, from the originally budgeted $.6 million.
Most recent attendance figures were issued at the end of January when well over 100,000 skaters had had a spin on the scenic rink.
