A man charged with second degree murder in the death of a Vanier man who spent six months in a coma following a beating made his first court appearance on Sunday morning.

Marco Michaud, 36, turned himself in to Ottawa Police without incident Saturday at around 1 p.m. On Thursday evening, police issued a broadcast to all officers alerting them that the force now had grounds to arrest Michaud in the death of Gérald Leduc, 53, who died in hospital on Jan. 18. On Friday, police said they were seeking the public’s help in finding Michaud, but warned that he was considered “armed and dangerous.”

Gerald Leduc died Jan. 18, six months after he was found beaten in his Vanier apartment.

Michaud made a brief court appearance from jail via video link on Sunday morning. He remains in custody and is to appear again on Monday.

Police began investigating what they had originally treated as an assault on July 18, 2017, after responding to what they termed a “disturbance” inside Leduc’s Selkirk Street apartment around 11 p.m that day. When police arrived, they found Leduc bloodied and left for dead.

Police issued an appeal for any information that would identify the attacker in August, but did not name the victim. Since Leduc’s death last month, the matter has been treated as a homicide file.
