WE, the charity founded by child’s rights advocate Craig Kielburger, is “no longer working with” Hedley, a Canadian rock band facing allegations of sexual misconduct.
The band were “celebrity ambassadors who have done much to support WE’s work at home and around the globe, including numerous WE Days,” said a spokesperson from WE in a written response to questions from this newspaper.
“WE is no longer working with Hedley.”
WE Day features a lineup of social activists, speakers and musical performers for students, with the aim of encouraging youth to get involved in causes that make a difference.
The statement comes as Hedley’s lead singer, Jacob Hoggard, is denying an allegation of sexual assault reportedly made by an Ottawa woman.
On Sunday, CBC Ottawa reported that an Ottawa woman has come forward with allegations that Hoggard assaulted her in a hotel room in Toronto after she met him on Tinder in November 2016.
According to the CBC report, the woman was an Algonquin College student and a volunteer at WE Day in Ottawa when she first communicated with Hoggard. This newspaper has not spoken with the woman, who was unnamed.
In a statement, Hoggard’s lawyer confirmed the two met on Tinder and the woman travelled from Ottawa to meet Hoggard at a hotel in Toronto. However, the statement added that “at no time did Jacob act badly or do anything without her consent.”
In its statement, WE said it was “deeply concerned about the allegations of sexual misconduct that have been shared on social media over the past week involving members of the band Hedley, and most recently the allegation of sexual assault against Jacob Hoggard, as reported by the CBC. Our collective hearts go out to the courageous woman who recently shared her story with the CBC,” said WE in a statement.
Jacob Hoggard of Hedley performs at TD Place in Ottawa on Feb. 20.
“WE has not received reports of any sexual misconduct by Hoggard or any of the other band members relating to our WE Day events.
“As a leading youth empowerment organization, WE made the decision when the initial allegations came to light to no longer work with Hedley on any future charitable initiatives, including WE Day events. As reported by the CBC, Hoggard and the college student, now 24, met online through the dating app, Tinder, and the alleged sexual assault occurred in Toronto. The CBC also reported they did not meet in person at WE Day Ottawa, 2016, where the woman volunteered and Hoggard performed with his band, Hedley. The safety of our volunteers, youth participants, staff and other stakeholders, is our top priority. WE Day has strict policies that protect its attendees, employees and volunteers.”
Hedley has announced that it has withdrawn from consideration for three awards at this year’s Junos, where the band was nominated for group of the year, pop album of the year and the fan choice award. Earlier this month, the management team that represented Hedley announced that it had terminated all business relationships with the band
The band performed in Ottawa last week to an enthusiastic crowd, but two opening acts had pulled out of the tour and were replaced.
