It seems Gatineau drivers are still not clear on the carpool concept.

For the third time in less than a week, Gatineau police were out Wednesday morning looking for drivers abusing carpool lane requirements and issued 68 tickets in less than two hours.

The blitz took place on the portion of Alexandre-Taché Boulevard between Saint-Joseph Boulevard and Montcalm Street. Police were on site between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

In addition to the 68 tickets issued for the improper use of carpool lanes, police issued seven other tickets for various other violations.

Police held their first carpool blitz in the area on Feb. 21 and issued 62 tickets to drivers who were travelling improperly in the lanes. A second operation was held the next day. That day police issued 25 tickets for the infraction.

Carpool lanes are reserved for high-occupancy vehicles like buses, taxis or other vehicles with three or more people in them.

The minimum penalty for driving in a reserved lane is $175 in addition to administrative costs.

Police said they planned to continue holding the blitzes in the area in the days ahead.
