Upper Ottawa Valley OPP officers and the force’s emergency response team were dispatched to Petawawa’s Valour School Wednesday – a day dedicated to combating bullying – after Facebook threats to the school.

Police were called in the school just before 7:30 a.m. and reported around noon that the school, which has students from junior kindergarten to Grade 12, remained in lockdown as a precaution during the ongoing investigation but “there is no threat to public safety.”

The Renfrew County District School Board said via social media that staff learned of “a threat made online to a student.”

“A number of buses with elementary students (en route to school) were rerouted to a secure site,” the board noted. Staff were at the site to to receive the children and parents were alerted to collect them if they wished.

All elementary school students had already been picked up by parents or guardians, the board said at about noon, so afternoon busing was canceled.

Bus service for secondary students was still being determined.

The school, on Leeder Lane off Civic Centre Road in the town 165 km northwest of Ottawa, was in “hold and secure” while the threat was being investigated.

Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day, the board had reminded parents Tuesday.

” It’s a day where we all stand up and say no to bullying,” board staff said. “Not in our schools, not online and not in our workplaces. Don’t be a bystander. Be better. Because everyone deserves to feel safe, cared for and respected.”
