Holland’s Cake and Shake is closing but its treats aren’t leaving the Parkdale Market area.
Owner Michael Holland has announced that Morning Owl Coffeehouse is taking over Holland’s Armstrong Street location but he will become the resident pastry chef.
Holland said on Instagram that as his business entered the last year of their lease, he was faced with big decisions.
“Having grown MUCH more than we ever anticipated, I was faced with considering expansion or simply put, shutting the store and moving on to new things,” he said. “While thinking this through, it just so happened that we started providing @morningowlrochester with some of our brownies. The fit seemed natural.”
Morning Owl Coffeehouse – which currently has locations on Bank Street downtown, on Rochester Street in Little Italy and in Kanata – will take over the space as of April. The last day for Holland’s Cake and Shake is Mar. 10 but Morning Owl customers will still be able to order large cakes, sandwiches will still be made with the signature milk bread and many of its products old and new will be found at more than one location, Holland said.
“Here’s the hard part,” Holland wrote. “I will miss seeing the many wonderful people that helped make Cake and Shake what it is. Our customers … truly are hardcore.
“The new Morning Owl takes over tentatively May 1st. It’s going to be fantastic.”
Jordan O’Leary, president of Morning Owl Coffeehouse along with RAW pulp and grind and Maverick Donut Company, confirmed the move in an e-mail Thursday.
He said it’s a team-up of similar businesses offering “amazing” sandwiches and scratch baking. He expects the location’s hours to increase and for it to most likely become a seven-day operation offering coffee, sandwiches, salads and, “of course,” ice cream.
“We will 100 per cent be adding Mike’s great creations to our menu and we will be bringing a neighbourhood coffee shop to the Wellington area,” O’Leary said. “Some of Mike’s team will be hanging around so you will see familiar faces.”
And he echoed Holland’s enthusiasm about the delicious deal.
“I’m most excited to work with him,” O’Leary said. “I’m a big fan myself.”
