Tributes to former Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry MPP Noble Villeneuve poured in Thursday after news of his death spread through the region and his party.

Villeneuve, a Progressive Conservative, served from 1983 to 1999. His roles included a stint as deputy speaker and four years of serving both as minister for francophone affairs and agriculture in premier Mike Harris’s government. He died in Maxville Wednesday at 79.

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark, the Progressive Conservative party’s deputy leader, remembered Villeneuve as a “a strong voice in Cabinet for farmers and for Eastern Ontario.”

“Ontario has lost a wonderful public servant in MPP Noble Villeneuve,” North Dundas Township Mayor Eric Duncan said via social media. “Smart, hardworking, down to earth (and a) great orator. He did so much to make rural Ontario a better place to live, work (and) raise a family.”

“Noble was rightly named,” said Frank Klees, a former Conservative cabinet minister. “Ever a gentleman, he carried out his responsibilities as MPP with grace and dignity and brought honour to the calling of public service.”

Villeneuve’s daughter, Roxanne, posted a picture on social media of her father with his own father on the night of his December 1983 byelection victory, adding: “Dad, you leave behind an amazing legacy — I’m proud to be your daughter.”

Villeneuve, who was born and raised on the family farm in Moose Creek, was a farmer and real-estate appraiser before being elected.

He served until he narrowly lost his seat to Liberal John Cleary — both were incumbents — in the new riding of Stormont-Dundas-Charlottenburgh in the 1999 election.

He was appointed a justice of the peace but soon spent more than four months in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

After leaving office, he was honoured by organizations including the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Dairy Farmers of Ontario and given an honourary doctorate by Laurentian University for securing equal funding to French-language schools and the establishment of autonomous French language school boards.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences on hearing of the passing of former MPP Noble Villeneuve. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Noble was a strong voice in Cabinet for Farmers and for Eastern Ontario
