Spring has sprung according to at least one yellow-spotted salamander.
While there’s some light snow and bluster in Friday’s forecast, we can expect sunshine and 5 C by Sunday in a return to unseasonably glorious weather.
Patrick Scott of the Fresh Air Experience in Wellington West spotted the amphibian on video while skiing on the Fortune Lake Parkway near Fortune Lake earlier this week.
“Our Instagram followers have deduced that it is likely a yellow-spotted salamander that ended its hibernation early due to the warm temperatures,” Scott explained on social media, adding that “I’m just glad I didn’t hit him!”
According to Ontario Nature, the blue-black salamanders with yellow or orange spots, which can grow to more than 20 cm long, breed in early spring, often while there is still ice on ponds.
You can’t blame this amphibian for thinking it’s early spring.
Local weather watcher James Wilson noted Thursday that February’s average high was 0 C and low -10.1 C. So-called normal would be -3.4 C and -12.8 C.
We are now into another month. Here is a look at some stats for February. It was much warmer than average with more rain and less snow. #Ottawa @BlacksWeather pic.twitter.com/ICrVSsLTRn

Friday’s forecast is for clouds, a 40 per cent chance of flurries, northerly winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40 and a high of 1 C. Periods of light snow should end overnight then there’s a 40 per cent chance of a reprise of flurries and a low of -2 C.
Saturday’s outlook is mainly-cloudy skies, a 40 per cent chance of morning and early-afternoon flurries, a high of 2 C and a low of -5 C.
For Sunday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a high of 5 C and a low of -5 C.
Monday’s forecast is for pure sunshine and 6 C with clear skies overnight and a low of -6 C.
The clouds are expected to roll in again Tuesday with a high of 4 C and a 40 per cent chance of overnight flurries with a low of -5 C.
Then we’re in for some potentially-wet weather with a 40 per cent chance of flurries or rain and highs of 2 C Wednesday and 3 C Thursday.
