Children’s aid workers in Ottawa have voted 74 per cent in favour of strike action, if necessary, if a contract isn’t reached with their employer, the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa.
Local 454 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union held the strike vote Thursday night.
The workers have been without a contract since Dec. 31 and talks with the CAS broke off on Feb. 17.
“We don’t want to go on strike, but we want a good contract,” said Michele Thorn, a child protection worker and president of Local 454. The local represents about 400 CAS employees.
“The current offer is unacceptable. Our members believe it puts too many of our jobs at risk.”
While money is a bargaining issue, the union is most concerned about contract language that could protect it from having some of its members’ jobs outsourced to private companies, Thorn said.
The company and the union have applied for conciliation, but in the meantime could resume negotiations on Mar. 6, Thorn said.
