Frustrated Senators fans will get to express themselves on “multiple” billboards in Ottawa before the end of the hockey season thanks to a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $10,000.

Those #Melnykout billboards will not be near the team’s home ice in Kanata, however.

Spencer Callaghan, the Senators fan who launched the campaign “to let Eugene Melnyk know that we have had enough,” said Friday he has been overwhelmed by support from about 500 fans who feel the same way he does about the team’s leadership.

He has amended the original plan to post a message to Melnyk on a billboard near the Canadian Tire Centre, saying there are no billboards available in the area until the fall.

But because of the amount of money raised — $10,227 as of Friday — Callaghan said the awareness campaign will probably include multiple billboards and likely a full-page newspaper ad.

The fundraising campaign included the hashtag #MelnykOut. Callaghan said the exact wording of the billboards is still being ironed out. Because Kanata is not a possibility, he said, there will be multiple billboards “for more impact.”

The campaign, he said, is more than just a few disgruntled fans unhappy about a lousy hockey season.

“The message here is we love the team and are willing to go through the ups and downs. What we are not willing to do is support an organization that has lost touch with the fan base and the community.”

He said Melnyk deserves the blame for mismanagement of the team.

“This is not personal. It is a community that is crying out and saying one of our institutions is dying. Who else can you blame at this point?”

Melnyk’s letter to fans this week “almost made things worse,” Callaghan said.

The hashtag #MelnykOut started trending on social media after Melnyk mused about moving the Senators out of Ottawa due to lack of support. The Sens owner made the comments in December, just before the Winter Classic was held at Lansdowne Park as part of the Canada 150 celebrations.
