Carleton University support staff went out on strike Monday after the union and administration failed to reach a contract settlement.

The campus is open and classes will be held as scheduled, the university said in a posting online.

It warned that students could encounter picket lines.

The bulletin advised students to treat the picket line as they would a busy intersection and to “keep personal bias and emotions in check…be friendly or neutral.”

CUPE local 2424, representing about 850 administrative, library and support staff, had planned to set up picket lines at 6 a.m.

Last-minute negotiations on Sunday failed.

The issue in the dispute concerns language in the employee pension plan.

The last strike at Carleton was a year ago, when contract teachers and teaching assistants walked a picket line for about an hour before that dispute was settled.
