An Ontario Ministry of Labour hearing into the workplace death of Petawawa’s Ethan Allard has been delayed until May 3.

Allard, a longtime junior hockey player in the Ottawa Valley, was 24 when he died after getting tangled in a concrete hopper at a construction site in Toronto on Jan. 16, 2017.

Following an investigation, the Ministry of Labour filed several charges against Torrent Shotcrete Canada Ltd., Allard’s employer. The charges included a failure to ensure a grate sensor on the hopper was maintained in good condition.

In addition, the company was alleged to have rendered a grate sensor inoperative and faces a further charge of failing to properly instruct an employee on safety information and/or supervision.

The company has hired legal counsel on the case, which was first presented at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto March 1. Lawyers for the company requested more time and the matter returns to court in two months.
