Marianne Wilkinson, the Kanata North councillor and the first mayor of Kanata, says she’s retiring from municipal politics.
Wilkinson made it official Tuesday morning during her International Women’s Day breakfast, confirming she won’t seek re-election in October.
Thank you for all of your support over the years. This will be my final #IWD2018 as I will be retiring this year. pic.twitter.com/iKkW45scFV

She currently sits on the transit commission, audit committee, information subcommittee and built-heritage subcommittee. She’s the chair of the Ottawa Community Lands Development Corp., a member of the Hydro Ottawa Holding board of directors and a trustee on the Ottawa Public Library board.
Wilkinson became the councillor for Kanata North in 2006, continuing her municipal advocacy on women’s issues, transit service and business development in the western suburb.
At the end of her political career, Wilkinson will have served a combined 25 years on the councils of March Township, City of Kanata, the Region of Ottawa-Carleton and the City of Ottawa.
The race to succeed Wilkinson could be one to watch.
Jenna Sudds, executive director of the CIO Strategy Council and former president of the Kanata North Business Association, announced on Tuesday that she’s running. David Gourlay, the former Ottawa Champions baseball club president, has also announced his intention to run for the seat.
Wilkinson is throwing her support behind Sudds.
The municipal election is Oct. 22. Nominations don’t open until May 1.
