A high-miler who blew by a patrolling OPP cruiser at 159 km/h insisted it was impossible he was speeding.

He was only going 98, the “argumentative” driver maintained when he was pulled over on Highway 401 westbound near Brockville, after he passed the cruiser at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The officer realized the motorist’s speedometer was reading in miles.

“Turns out 98 mph = 159 mph,” Leeds County OPP noted in a release Tuesday.

There was no word on whether the 40-year-old Cornwall man thought this gambit would work or just really, really hates metric.

But his vehicle was impounded for a week and his driver’s licence suspended. He’ll appear in court in Brockville to face a Highway Traffic Act charge of stunt driving, which carries a minimum fine of $2,000.
