The Irish, possibly, have long been ahead of their time, but why hold the St. Patrick’s Day parade a week early, when 17th is a Saturday too?

Hold on a wee minute, says the Irish Society of the National Capital Region, which offered this explanation to the timing of Ottawa’s parade.

“The Irish Society of the National Capital region always holds their parade on the last Saturday before March 17th. Why? It is a big day for entertainers with a great payoff. Also many people like to celebrate the 17th at pubs, church, home parties, etc. The parade committee can get entertainers who are still available when the parade is earlier.

“Furthermore, it would be a logistical nightmare to close the streets during the middle of the week when the 17th falls on a weekday. A Saturday works best. Toronto is holding their parade on Sunday, March 11th and Montreal on Sunday, March 18th. Only New York City and Savannah, Georgia hold their parades on the 17th.”

The local Irish Society is putting a float in the Montreal parade and local residents can make the trip down on a bus leaving Ottawa City Hall on 9 a.m. on March 18. Cost is $40 return. (RSVP the Irish Society online.) This parade begins at noon.

The Society, in fact, is sponsoring 10 days of festivities (March 8 to 18), including a party at the Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne Park until 10 p.m. on Saturday and a breakfast with celtic music on Sunday (10 a.m. until noon) at Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts at St. Patrick and Cumberland streets.
