The impending thaw spring will soon transform your outdoor space from a blinding white patch to something more vibrant. The Ottawa Home and Garden Show will have a wide array of ideas and inspiration to help get you started.
The show, which runs from March 22 to 25, will feature cutting-edge landscape designs, along with dozens of experts and exhibitors such as builders, furniture and decor companies, pool and spa businesses, and mortgage specialists that will fill the EY Centre in Uplands Drive.
Robert Johnstone, the show manager, says the hot trend in the outdoor market this season is “urbanization,” where people are taking the space they already have and maximizing it.
“People (are) doing urban gardens and living areas on their roofs, terraces and porches and stuff like that. I think it’s that dream of having a little bit of both worlds, the urban, downtown city feel with the nature outside, all wrapped in one.”
To keep things interesting, there will be plenty of giveaways, perks and contests that will include a $20,000 pool and landscaping installation. And while you are taking it all in you can stop by the beer garden for a fresh pint from Perth Brewery.
Here are a few highlights visitors will see at the 38th show.
Living Landscapes
While it may not be spring yet, this living exhibit will give visitors a taste of the warm weather to come. Living landscapes will be set in one of the centre’s halls, which will be transformed into a series of backyard oases, each created by a local landscape company. The settings will feature flower beds, trees and grass with a variety of pergolas, decking and patio stones. Vistors will have the opportunity to choose their favourite garden and the winning company will be awarded the People’s Choice Award, sponsored by the Canadian Tulip Festival.
Main Stage Speakers
HGTV host Carson Arthur will be a featured speaker at the Ottawa Home and Garden Show on March 22-25 at the EY Centre.
The Urban Barn main stage will feature several presenters such HGTV’s Carson Arthur and Cityline’s DIY guru Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault.
Arthur, an outdoor design and lifestyle expert, will highlight the 10 biggest mistakes homeowners make when renovating outdoors and the easiest ways to fix a bad situation. He will be presenting on March 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and March 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Designer Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault will be a featured speaker at the show.
Allaire Perrault will teach her audience how to create a customized design plan that will help define a personal style. She will also share DIY inspiration and project ideas that incorporate the latest trends without blowing the budget. Allaire Perrault will present March 24 from 3 to 4 p.m. and March 25 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Rust-Oleum DIY challenge
Ten local personalities will be challenged to source gently used items from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore with a limited budget and create a planter using a little elbow grease and products from Rust-Oleum Consumer Brands Canada. Their creations — which should be designed to grow flowers or vegetables indoors or out — will be auctioned onsite with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa.
Bonneville Homes model home
Explore Bonneville Homes’ latest Micro-Loft series that will be brought into the EY Centre and installed for visitors to explore. The Illüma model features a mezzanine-level bedroom, under-stair storage and ceilings varying in height. This prefab home is furnished with furniture and décor by Maison Ethier. Landscaping and exterior décor is by Permacon, Aberdeen and beyond the House.
Flower Nite
Flower Nite is the bouquet version of Paint Nite only instead of picking up brushes trained floral instructors will help you create a spring centrepiece that you can take home.
