The City of Ottawa has expressed appreciation to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for its support of community projects in Ottawa – including enhancing accessibility to the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) branch in Manotick and other facilities across the city. Each year, the City receives $5 million in OLG funds generated by the Rideau Carleton Raceway Casino, which is placed in the City’s general revenues account and reinvested towards improvements to City facilities and infrastructure.
The exterior work at the Manotick OPL branch – which hosted the recognition event – will involve removing barriers along the connecting pathway between the library entrance and the parking lot and South River Drive this spring. These accessibility enhancements will create equal access to this community hub, which provides resources and activities for all ages – including a 50-plus short story contest, Teen Tech Video Contest, older adult reading circles about aging, and much more.
In addition to the Manotick and other OPL branches, a portion of the funds received between March 2016 and March 2017 helped to fund accessibility improvement projects at other City facilities, including:
Funds received during the same period were also applied to recreation infrastructure projects, including splash pads and playgrounds in various City parks.
To date, Ottawa has received more than $72 million in non-tax gaming revenue for hosting OLG slots and the Rideau Carleton Raceway Casino.
Quotes
“Ottawa residents continue to benefit from this partnership between the City and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. This continued support by OLG over the years has provided much-needed enhancements to our community parks, sports fields, recreation facilities and our many Ottawa Public Library branches across the city. This year, we see how these infrastructure enhancements help our library branches to be more accessible for everyone – creating an active and vibrant community.”
Councillor Scott Moffatt, Rideau Goulbourn Ward
“The 33 Ottawa Public Library branches across the city are community hubs for lively learning and leisure. We are pleased to benefit from the City and OLG partnership for the funding towards improvements and renovations. Such support allows OPL to focus on inspiring learning, sparking curiosity, and connecting people of all ages through OPL’s wide-ranging collections, programs and services.”
Councillor Tim Tierney, Chair of the Ottawa Public Library Board
“OLG is proud to be a vital part of the City of Ottawa for more than 18 years and we look forward to continuing to build on that support. Each and every year, 100 per cent of OLG proceeds are invested in Ontario. From healthcare, to education, to community festivals, these funds are hard at work in Ottawa and all across our province. We value the contribution of gaming site employees in making life here that much richer.”
