City police traffic officers ended up schooling drivers in a three-day back-to-school blitz this week with a whopping 226 charges for everything from speeding and distraction to driving while suspended.

Some low points of the post-March Break Project Interlude include an 18-year-old whose dad’s car landed in impound when he was caught going 98 km/h in a 40 km/h school zone.

“Nothing you can say to a parent will replace the person that you MAY have hit going at those speeds in a zone where you have to expect the unexpected,” said Sgt. Mark Gatien.

Some other school-zone failures included a parent – kids in the back – going 81 km/h and a suspended driver clocked at 73 km/h.

But Const. Jon Hall, who tweets as The Bearded Cop, noted that the real aim was to boost road safety to protect kids. Asked why police announce blitzes in advance – when they could write more tickets if they didn’t – he had a simple rejoinder.

“We catch plenty,” he said. “If someone drove safely because they saw it on the news or social media, GOOD. #Prevention before #reaction always.”
