Officers from the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to Perth and District Collegiate Institute on Thursday at around 11:30 am after an altercation between two students.
Police said, following the altercation, there were reports that at least one of those involved made threats to other students at the school. However, a police investigation into the claims found that the threats were “unfounded”.
A statement from the school posted to Facebook said the students involved in the incident would not be at school on Friday. Officials from the Institute also said there were no threats made to the school, however precautionary measures were being taken to keep students safe. The school was not specific about what those measures entailed.
Police said, much misinformation was being spread following the incident Thursday on social media like Twitter and Facebook that caused an unwarranted level of concern within the community.
“We aware that there has been significant information being shared on social media that, although inaccurate, has caused some concern for students and parents,”said Derek Needham, OPP Lanark County Detachment commander. “To provide a degree of comfort to students attending classes today (Friday), uniformed members will have a presence at PDCI”
Police said an investigation into the incident, to determine whether charges against the students are warranted, is ongoing.
