Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a weekend swarming near the Westgate Mall that “would appear to have racial overtones,” according to Staff Sgt. Mike Haarbosch.

Police said the male victim, who was not identified, had just left his workplace near the mall on Friday night at 11:25 p.m. when he was harassed by two men while waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Carling Avenue and Merivale Road.

The victim was wearing a turban, and the two suspects, who are both described as white men in their 20s, “asked the victim about his ethnicity, and about cutting his beard and hair,” police said.

The two suspects left, but then returned asking the victim for change.

The suspects began hurling racial slurs, and one of the men brandished a knife.

The victim ran to a nearby business, but found the exterior doors locked.

Police said the suspects then attacked the man, assaulting and threatening him while dragging him on the ground. The suspects stole the man’s phone and bus pass. They also removed and then stole his turban.

Paramedics arrived and treated the victim on the scene for minor injuries.

Police are searching for two white men in their 20s. The first suspect is described as clean-shaven with short blonde/brown hair, standing 5-feet-10 and wearing an orange sweatshirt, blue jeans and running shoes.

The second suspect is described as clean-shaven, standing 5-feet-6 and wearing blue track or pyjama pants.

The Ottawa Police Service robbery unit is currently investigating.

“Part of the investigation that will be taking place will be to ascertain if this was a hate-motivated crime,” said Haarbosch.

Anyone with information is asked to call the robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116.
