Provincial police have charged a New Brunswick man wanted on a number of warrants in connection with a wrong-way chase along Highway 401 Tuesday that resulted in a crash and injuries to a second driver.
The chase began Tuesday afternoon when police pulled over a rental truck in South Stormont Township and began questioning the driver.
“The officer that was talking to him was getting mixed messages about his identity,” said Cst. Tylor Copeland of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP. “Then (the suspect) fled, drove down the highway for a bit before he went through one of those turnarounds.”
The rental truck then travelled down the wrong way of Highway 401 before crashing into a passenger vehicle. Copeland said the collision occurred as the rental truck was attempting to make a turn. It was not a head-on crash.
The driver of the truck was not injured and was arrested at the scene. The male driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. A police officer also suffered minor injuries.
Cary Carriere, 47, of Grand Falls N.B. was charged with several offences including flight causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstruction and assaulting a peace officer and failing to stop at a scene of an accident. He was also charged with several offences related to identity theft and breach of probation.
Carriere was held pending a bail hearing in Cornwall.
