A Manotick construction company was fined $70,000 Thursday after one of its workers was critically injured during a concrete pour in 2016.
Manotick Concrete on River Road was convicted and fined Thursday by justice of the peace Herb Kreling after pleading guilty in an Ottawa court.
The incident occurred in August 2016 when one of the company’s trucks was pouring concrete into forms at a house construction site in Greely. A worker was standing on a scaffold using a hose to direct the concrete pour when the truck suddenly tipped, striking the worker with its boom assembly. The worker suffered critical injuries.
An investigation by the Ministry of Labour found that though the truck’s four stabilizing outriggers were extended, one of them suddenly sunk about a metre into soft ground. Inspectors found that a steel pad under the leg meant to spread the weight was too small and didn’t meet the standards of the truck’s operating manual.
In addition to the fine, Manotick Concrete must also pay a 25 per cent victim’s surcharge.
