Weather watchers say that it’s looking increasingly likely that a “major ice storm” will strike southerly parts of the province this weekend.
It would make travel hazardous while accumulations of up to 20 millimetres of ice combined with gusty winds to 60 km/h may cause widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines, Environment Canada warns.
It’s not yet clear which areas will be most affected but the agency’s special weather statement includes Eastern Ontario communities of Napanee, Picton, Kingston, Gananoque, Brockville, Prescott, Kemptville, Merrickville and Westport.
Environment Canada said that a slow-moving low-pressure system is approaching with precipitation that might start out as rain but will switch to freezing rain as northwesterly winds draw in colder air from an arctic high-pressure system.
Expect a few rounds of precipitation with a “significant threat of prolonged freezing rain” in some areas.
