A 25-year veteran OPP officer could face two demerit points and a $110 fine after a crash that involved a police cruiser in Leeds.

Const. Vince Tremblay, 57, was charged with making an unsafe turn under the Highway Traffic Act on Friday, two days after the crash on County Road 29 dealt minor injuries to himself and occupants of another vehicle.

A charge under the Highway Traffic Act is not criminal, but may carry penalties such as fines, demerit points or licence suspension.

Police said Tremblay was in a marked OPP car on Wednesday evening when he saw a speeding vehicle going the opposite direction from him.

Police said he turned on his emergency lights and went to the right shoulder of the road to allegedly make a U-turn. While he was doing so, a grey SUV collided with Tremblay’s cruiser.

The 17-year-old driver of the SUV and her passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

OPP spokesman Const. Roop Sandhu said he was not aware if Tremblay would also face disciplinary action at work.
