Ottawa paramedics treated a 68-year-old man who caught fire while smoking near an oxygen supply Friday night.

Firefighters responded to 1144 Woodroffe Ave., near Iris Street, at 10:06 p.m. for a report of a man on fire on the front lawn. Firefighters learned a fire had started inside the residence. They gave medical attention to the man, who had critical injuries. Other firefighters entered the residence.

Paramedics said the man received second- and third-degree burns from the fire, which was under investigation.

It was the second fire reported to Ottawa Fire Services on Friday night.

At 6:52 p.m., firefighters received a 911 call from an off-duty police officer reporting flames and smoke visible at a house at 7179 Dalmeny Rd. in rural south Ottawa.

The house wasn’t occupied at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

The fire department did not estimate the monetary amount of damages, but said the structure was no longer standing.

That blaze was also under investigation.
