A messy wallop of snow and ice and freezing rain will come a bit later than expected, but is due to reach Eastern Ontario Saturday evening.

Environment Canada warns that Saturday night’s storm will be followed by freezing rain on Sunday with “significant accumulations” possible. The winter storm warning for Ottawa South, Metcalfe and Richmond was issued at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.

The storm, which is coming across the U.S. Midwest, has already dumped 15 cm to 25 cm of snow in the Bruce Peninsula as it tracks eastward. Between five and 10 cm of snow is expected in the Ottawa area.

The snow and ice pellets expected Saturday night in Eastern Ontario will change to freezing rain by Sunday morning, Environment Canada reports. Another two cm of snow could fall Sunday.

The freezing rain will give way to rain by Sunday evening.

Environment Canada is warning of possible power outages related to the freezing rain and the gusting winds from the northwest are expected to accompany the storm. The agency is advising people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Saturday’s high will be just 0 C, with an overnight low of -4 C. Sunday’s high will be -3 C, with the temperature dropping to a low of -5 C overnight.

Periods of freezing rain may continue into Monday with a high temperature of just a few degrees above freezing.

The average high for this time of year is 10 C.

There is some hope for later in the week, when the agency is calling for clearing skies on Wednesday with the temperature soaring to 7 C.
