In an unanimous vote, Gatineau city council gave the go-ahead on Tuesday to pursue plans for a light rail transit system that would connect Aylmer to the downtown core.

The city will now ask the Quebec government for assistance in funding the project, which the Société de transport de l’Outaouais estimates will cost between $700 and $900 million.

At a press conference prior to the vote, Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin said a unanimous vote by council would signal the city is unified in its desire to bring light rail to the area.

“We want light rail – we want the same technology as Ottawa” and we want to get this project going, he said.

Later this year, the STO is set to release a report on the specifics of Gatineau’s LRT, including possible routes

Public consultations conducted by the city noted that the LRT option is preferred by the people of Gatineau. If implemented, the city said LRT would likely entice non-public transit users to convert to the new system.

Pat Scrimgeour, OC Transpo’s director of transit customer systems and planning, said OC Transpo will be assisting the STO to study compatibility between Ottawa’s soon-to-be-launched LRT and a future LRT line in Gatineau.

According the NCR’s 2011 Household Origin-Destination Survey, close to 6,000 people take public transit for work from Ottawa to Gatineau and back again every day. Nearly 13,500 commuters make the round-trip trek from Gatineau to Ottawa.
