In the 19th century, French writer Marcel Proust popularized a game now known as the Proust Questionnaire.
The game involves answering a list of existential questions with the aim of revealing one’s true nature.
On 4-20, a day when hundreds of cannabis enthusiasts and activists gather on Parliament Hill, media traditionally head to the Hill to interview those gathered and write stories, or produce broadcasts, that provide a brief snapshot of what went on.
While there’s nothing wrong with those stories, they are limited in their ability to tell the story of the crowd — to reveal the crowd’s true nature, if you will.
Now, it might be soundly argued, that revealing the true nature of a large, diverse crowd is an impossible task. However, on a day known for sporadic bouts of creativity, where ideas to re-shape the world are born and then forgotten, an impossible task seemed only fitting.
So this year, this newspaper decided to cover 4-20 a tad differently, by heading into the Hill crowd with the Proust Questionnaire in hand.
We talked to a raft of different people, asking them questions from the 19th century parlour game.
Below is a composite response of the Proust Questionnaire from the gathered multitudes.
1) What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Friends and family and a beautiful sunny day.
–Bev, 59
2) What is your greatest fear?
I would say, being alone.
–Bev, 59

Liars.
–Brent, 51
5) Which living person do you most admire?
What’s a living person? Sorry. My dog, Buddy. He’s a gangster with a heart of gold. He was a half Newfoundlander, half Saint Bernard and he raised me. He’s dead now.
–James, 29
6) What is your greatest extravagance?
I’m sorry. I’m medical. I have no choice. This is my extravagance. You give me anything, yeah, it’s got to be this. This and travelling. Smoking weed and travelling, in Canada.
–Bev, 59
7) What is your current state of mind?
I just had some General Nutrition Centre Mega Man pills, which are mostly vitamins, and so, um, I’m feeling pretty mineralized.

10) What do you most dislike about your appearance?

–James, 29
11) Which living person do you most despise?
One thing that I’ve been thinking about: It’s really, really tough to understand other people. You may have a knee-jerk response or idea of a person but recently I’ve been finding more and more there’s another part of brain that says, you know, you don’t know everything about this person – I know, in your life right, you’ve had some tough s— happen and some amazing things going on. The same thing is going on with that person. One thing I do know is I know myself probably better. You could say maybe that I despise myself the most. I know myself and I know there’s a lot of things I want to improve on and get better at.
–Gare, 27
12) What is the quality you most like in a man?
As a man, I realize I’m in a country that’s mostly ruled by men, and that’s how it’s been for a long time and that’s probably what’s it’s going to be for an unknown future amount of time. I guess, with a man just having awareness. Awareness is a very valuable thing as a man.
–Gare, 27
13) What is the quality you most like in a woman?
S—’s still not fair. S—’s still not equal. For women to get at the same place that men are at to have more equality … courage … perseverance.
–Gare, 27
14) Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
I do kick myself every time I say ‘like’. I, like – (laughs) – I’ve become very aware of it. My mother was an English teacher growing up so she was very, like, ‘eloquence is important – don’t say like’ and so I say it all the time and I’m so conscious of it.”
–Connor, 24
15) What or who is the greatest love of your life?
I’m a nerd and I’m going to say science. I’m going to say education, learning, and science.
–Connor, 24
16) When and where were you happiest?
It’s actually an easy question for me. It was on January 1, 2016. I was in Peterborough in the hospital and it was when my daughter was born. That was a really special moment for me.

I love cats, but I wouldn’t want to be an outdoor cat, you know what I mean? I’d want to be a loved cat, a house cat.
–Ashley, 19
21) Where would you most like to live?
I would live in Rome or New York City or if it wasn’t permanent, Tokyo … Italy because I’m Italian but also the way everything is different there, they have more vacation time, family is a priority there, longer lunches, shorter days, the culture.
–Ashley, 19
22) What is your most treasured possession?
Oh, that’s hard. I’d probably go with, honestly, my computer. I have my music on my computer. And my instruments. I make alternative indie rock. I also make beats and stuff for fun.
–Sam, 18
23) What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Wow … You can get miserable from a relationship. Any kind of relationship. You can get miserable from somebody dying, or breaking up with somebody, or you know, you’re moving away from your family.
–Sam, 18
24) What is your favourite occupation?
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to school. I lack intellectual stimulation in my life but I find it in books, art that I produce, clay sculptures. There’s so much that I want to do: help children, health, develop new projects but at the same time I want to be auto-dependent. I detest the bureaucratic system in which we live. Gandalf the Grey, because it’s a sick name.

Probably Leonardo DiCaprio because he’s like so supportive of making the earth a better place and stuff, and I love Titanic.
–Maya, 17

Daquan, Michelangelo, and Ezekiel. They’re exotic but they have a hint of spice and are super sick.
–Stephen, 18
32) What is it that you most dislike?
I don’t like the wood ticks. Cause I don’t know what their purpose in life is really. I know that the birds eat them, but other than that …
–Cathy, 57
33) What is your greatest regret?
I guess not working as hard as I should have. I could have been a lot farther than I am now. If I’d worked harder in the past, you know, better marks.
–Tyler, 17
34) How would you like to die?
Personally, I was thinking spontaneous combustion ’cause it just happens and you don’t even know it.
–Sunshine, 25
35) What is your motto?
Probably carpe diem, ’cause I’m living it day by day. I was a ski instructor, now I’m a landscaper waiting for my job to start, saving for a camper van, and I’m pretty much on my fourth time across Canada now.
–Sunshine, 25
