It’s another sure sign that spring has at last arrived.

Ottawa Fire Services slapped a city-wide ban on open fires Friday afternoon and said the ban will remain in effect until conditions improve. Or as the Fire Service puts it: until “the green grass starts to show through tall dead grass.”

One problem firefighters face this time of year is the soggy spring ground, which makes it impossible for heavy trucks to go off road to fight bush and grass fires. Dry spells and high winds can quickly make small fires spread this time of year .

The ban includes agricultural burns, brush pile burns, and campfires and even applies to property owners with open fire permits.

Cigarettes are a common fire source and the department warns not to throw cigarette butts out of car windows while driving.

In addition, the Fire Service offers these tips to reduce the risk of grass and brush fires around your home:

  • Clear all combustible materials such as tree limbs, leaves and other dry materials away from buildings and propane tanks.
  • Keep barbecue propane tanks at least three metres from buildings.
  • Wood piles should be stored a safe distance from your home.
  • Trees should be pruned to create a good vertical separation from the ground.
  • Clear out any accumulated dry or dead debris from your property.
