The next few days are going to bring the kind of weather we deserved weeks ago.

Friday got the ball rolling, with a high of 10.8 C — the first time since February that Ottawa’s temperature reached double digits.

And there’s a solid period of sunshine and warmer air in the forecast. The highs are forecast to reach 11 C Saturday, 12 C Sunday, 17 C Monday and a glorious 18 C on Tuesday, with sunshine all the way.

As a bonus, the overnight lows are mostly going to stay above the freezing point for a change, which is good news for those who bike to work in the early morning.

Just for context, the normal high for this time of year is 13 C.

Factors behind the arrival of decent weather: An area of cold air that forced its way down from the Arctic is finally in retreat.

As well, the sun is pumping more energy into the system each day. At the beginning of April, the sun reached a maximum of 49 degrees above the horizon at midday. It now rises more than 56 degrees high, and is going higher each day, which concentrates a greater amount of solar energy on any given spot in the Northern Hemisphere.

Daylight hours are getting longer too. Ottawa received 12 hours and 47 minutes of daylight at the beginning of April and now has 13 hours and 49 minutes, for an increase of more than an hour in only three weeks.

The second half of the coming week isn’t quite as pretty, with highs around 12 to 13 C and some rain. But at least it isn’t snow.
