Police are are appealing for caution after a smoker’s match, tossed into the bush as he worked on a vehicle roadside, sparked an “out-of-control” grass fire in Rideau Lakes Township over the weekend.

It happened Sunday afternoon on Mother Barnes Road, Leeds County OPP reported after investigating the incident.

‘The ground may still be wet underneath but the debris on top is dry providing fuel for fire,” Staff-Sgt. Josh Kingsley warned. “A careless act by one person may have dire consequences for others, including the firefighters and other emergency responders who risk their lives at fires.”

In Ottawa, the fire department issued a city-wide burn ban Friday effective until dry conditions improve, which will be evident when new green growth shows through tall, dead grass. Other risk fires include springtime spells of dry weather and high winds.

All open fires are banned even for those with open air fire permits and including agricultural and brush-pile burns and camp fires.

“There will be zero tolerance enforcement during the fire ban,” Ottawa Fire Services warned.

Carelessly-discarded smokes are also a “major” cause of grass fires during dry periods, the service said, asking smokers to take care when butting out and to avoid throwing cigarettes out vehicle windows.
