For one day only this weekend, Ottawa residents can dump their stockpiles of used batteries, broken cellphones, and aerosol cans at the city’s first household hazard waste depot of the year.

The depot will be held on April 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the OC Transpo Park and Ride at 1201 Trim Rd.

Approved items include pool chemicals, fire extinguishers, pharmaceuticals, syringes, paint containers and other items. Residential electronic waste, like computers, televisions and cameras will also be accepted.

The city is encouraging residents to use the Waste Explorer function on its website and to locate retailers who will accept household hazardous waste year-round. It is also promoting its Take it Back! program, which collaborates with businesses and charities who accept some used items from Styrofoam chips, to mobility aids, to pianos outside of the city’s scheduled household hazard waste depot dates.

In 2017, the City of Ottawa said it diverted more than 627 tonnes of hazardous waste from landfill thanks to contributions from Ottawans its household hazardous waste depots.

Sunday’s depot is followed by several other scheduled household hazardous waste depots, which will also run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
