Gatineau will be a stop for a 25th anniversary tour next year of Cirque du Soleil’s ground-breaking show, Alegría.
The Montreal-based producer and Gatineau city hall announced Alegría will be staged Aug. 1-11, 2019, under the troupe’s iconic blue-and-yellow big top at the Place des Festivals site in the Zibi development.
Last summer, the Cirque’s Volta show staged 32 performances at the same site, drawing more than 75,000 people.
Gatineau officials said at the time the show had a “remarkable” spillover effect on nearby downtown businesses, particularly restaurants and bars.
Alegría, which premiered in 1994, has been performed more than 5,000 times and seen by more than 14 million spectators in more than 250 cities around the world. Although it was designed as a tent show, it was restaged to be performed in arenas and was, briefly, a residency-type show in a major Las Vegas casino.
Ticket prices were not announced, but Cirque is taking reservations for pre-sales on its website.
