Nominations open 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the next municipal election, signalling the official start of a campaign period that will last until the Oct. 22 vote.

When the city has received their papers and fees, candidates for city council and the four school boards can start collecting campaign contributions and spending the money on their runs for office. The names on the ballots will be finalized by July 27.

Here are five things to know about this year’s municipal election.

You can register your own advertising campaign in support or opposition of a candidate

One of the big changes to the 2018 municipal election is the third-party advertising rules. An individual, corporation or union can register with the city as a third-party advertiser, raising money and spending it on shadow campaigns. There is no registration fee and the third-party advertisers can raise money from corporations and unions, subject to contribution limits. Registration for third-party advertisers also opens on Tuesday.

Corporate or union money can’t be donated to candidates

Another first for this municipal election campaign: no corporation or union can donate money to a candidate. Individuals still can contribute, and, of course, individuals who own corporations can donate to campaigns. The names of the people who have donated to campaigns won’t be revealed until months after the election through each candidate’s financial filings to the city.

Another quiet mayoral race is possible, but there could be some ward battles

Coun. Jody Mitic has said he will not seek re-election

No big name has come forward to say he or she will run against incumbent Mayor Jim Watson, who has confirmed he’ll seek a third consecutive term. It could be another easy ride for Watson back to the corner office at city hall. Other candidates could be in for a fight. There will be a minimum of three new councillors, since Marianne Wilkinson, Mark Taylor and Jody Mitic have indicated they won’t seek re-election in Kanata North, Bay and Innes wards, respectively. Early ward races to watch also include Alta Vista, Stittsville, College, Capital and Osgoode, all of which have seen challengers putting out feelers ahead of the nomination period.

Provincial election might delay intense campaigning

The municipal election campaign period straddles the Ontario general election, so it’s more likely that residents will see municipal candidates come to their doors after the June 7 provincial vote. Municipal election signs won’t appear for months; lawn signs on private property aren’t allowed until Aug. 23.

Shorter term for Class of 2018

The four-year municipal term of office will be slightly shorter compared with the 2014-2018 term. The new term begins Dec. 1, 2018 and lasts until Nov. 14, 2022. Two terms from now, council and school boards will take over Nov. 15, 2022. The term dates are another change to the provincial election law.
