The City’s Community and Protective Services Committee today received a third party independent review of the City’s long-term care homes.
Greg Fougère, a specialist in long-term care and the former CEO of the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, joined the Committee to present his findings and recommendations on how to manage risks in the provision of services and care to residents in the four long-term care homes.
Staff have reviewed the recommendations, along with those provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and generated through feedback from residents and their families, to develop a comprehensive work plan to address the findings.
The Committee heard that additional staff are needed to ensure that residents receive more personal and nursing care than they do now. The Mayor and Chair Diane Deans moved that 35 additional support staff be hired as soon as possible in 2018, with an immediate, part-year investment of $800,000, and this motion was approved by the Committee.
The Committee approved five Declarations of Compliance, which are required under current service accountability agreements with the Champlain Local Health Integration Network. The City fulfilled its obligations under the agreements, which cover long-term care homes, adult day programs and an acquired brain injury program, in 2017.
A new supportive housing project slated to be ready for occupancy this fall will support 42 women experiencing chronic homelessness. The Committee delegated authority to the Director of Housing Services to reallocate $420,000 under the Municipal Housing and Homelessness Investment Plan to fund this project, which would be operated by Cornerstone Housing for Women.
Items requiring Council approval from today’s Community and Protective Services Committee will go to City Council on Wednesday, May 9.
