Quebec police have assembled a task force to investigate a 55-year-old man suspected of serial sex crimes across three jurisdictions in the province.

Clément Péloquin, 55, of Chénéville, appeared in Gatineau court in March, where he was charged with a range of sex crimes involving minors, including sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation of persons under 14.

He was released from custody with a list of court-imposed conditions.

Sûreté du Québec investigators now fear there could be more alleged victims, said Sgt. Marc Tessier.

Police have launched a multi-jurisdictional task force — Gestion des enquêtes sur les crimes en série — to investigate complaints in Lac-Simon, Longueuil and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Police believe the alleged crimes were committed between 1998 and 2010 in those communities. The suspect has lived in all three communities, and Tessier said police have already identified “multiple cases” in each jurisdiction.

Péloquin most recently listed his residence in Chénéville, near Lac-Simon, about 90 kilometres northeast of Ottawa.

Police would not say how many people have come forward so far. Tessier would only say police have already spoken with “many” alleged victims. Police believe each was a minor at the times of the alleged crimes.

“There are many. But to protect those victims, because it took a lot of courage to come forward, we’re not going to say (how many) there were,” said Tessier.

Tessier said the police investigation continued after Péloquin was initially charged earlier this year, and police “found out there were more (alleged) victims afterwards.”

Tessier said the purpose of Tuesday’s press release was to appeal to those people to come forward.

Police declined to say where the suspect worked during the time frame they provided, but said the alleged victims were “not random.”

“I can confirm he knew the (alleged) victims and he had established some kind of confidence with them,” Tessier said.

That contact, said Tessier, was “not entirely related to his profession.”

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sûreté du Québec’s Criminal Information Center at 1-800-659-4264.
